Leon Leyson was born on September 15, 1929 in Narewka, Poland, the fifth and youngest child of Moshe and Channah. Leon’s Polish name was Leib Lejzon. Narewka was a small farming community located 325 miles northeast of Krakow and had been home to the Leysons for generations. Most of the family had been farmers and had lived a simple life revolving around the land and their Jewish faith. He is one of the youngest surviving members of 1,200 Polish Jews whose lives were saved by Schindler, when he employed them to work in his factories during World War II. Leyson was 10 years old The youngest of five children of a glass factory worker and his wife, Leyson was born Sept. 15, 1929, in Narewka, Poland, a village near the Russian border.

With incredible luck, perseverance, and grit, Leyson was able to survive the sadism of the Nazis, including that of the demonic Amon Goeth, commandant of Plaszow, the concentration camp outside Krakow. Leon fled to America and his surviving family went to Israel. Leon would go on to join the military for forty years, marry and have a family, and advance his education. It wasn’t until Schindler’s List came out that Leon finally started talking about his experiences as a Jewish child during World War II. This book was amazing!
